Pirivom Santhipom- Star Vijay TV

Pirivom Santhipom was a family oriented mega serial telecasted in Vijay TV. It was aired Monday to Friday from 7.30pm to 8.00pm. The serial got over on May 4th 2012 after completing 272 episodes.

The Story (updated on 4 May 2012):

Revathy loses her parents when she is very young and then grows up in her uncle's home. Revathy and her uncle's daughter Jothy grow up together and they are more like friends than relatives. Even Revathy's uncle shows more affection towards Revathy than his own daughter Jothy.

After completing her college, Revathy gets a job offer from popular industrialist Abirami. She accepts the job and Abirami (as expected) likes Revathy's simplicity. Abirami has a son named Prabhu who is ill and she decides to marry him to Revathy. Revathy's uncle doesn't like this marriage proposal, but Revathy insists him to accept it. So Prabhu marries Revathy and (as always) he starts to recover because of Revathy's affection.

Jothy is not as beautiful as Revathy and hence her marriage keeps getting delayed. Meanwhile Abirami's brother Karthik is cheated by his girl friend. At this time unknowingly, Jothy talks to Karthik as Anamika and Karthik talk to her as Shanmugam. So, both of them talk to each other unaware of their true identity.

These telephone conversations lead to love. So, both of them decide to meet each other directly. At this point unexpectedly, Jothy's father arranges her marriage with Aravind. Since her father is a heart patient, Jothy is unable to oppose the marriage. Karthik attends Jothy's betrothal function and in that function both Jothy and Karthik, finds out who the real Anamika and Shanmugam is!

Shocked, Karthik tries to kill himself but is saved just on time by his relatives. Jothy knows that she is the reason for Karthik's suicide attempt and apologizes to him. She also persuades him to forget her and marry someone else. Karthik refuses and instead persuades Jothy to marry him. But Jothy is very reluctant. She knows that her father hates Abirami's family because he thinks that Abirami duped Revathy into marrying Prabhu. Karthik doesn't stop it there and finally succeeds in changing Jothy's heart. The lovers decide to inform about their love to Aravind. Though initially shocked, Aravind accepts to help them. But within his heart, Aravind, still likes Jothy and keeps sending her messages from an unknown number.

Revathy, who is unaware of the love affair between Jothy and Karthik, finds out that Jothy is in love with someone other than Aravind. She tries hard to find Jothy's lover and finally succeeds in identifying him and is shocked. She tries to indirectly warn her aunty and is surprised to find out that her aunty and grandmother (aunt’s mom) are already aware of Jothy - Karthik love. Her aunty believes that Jothy has forgotten everything about Karthik, though Revathy knows it's not true she keeps mum.

Meanwhile, accidentally, Jothy finds out Aravind's true face and is very angered. One day mysteriously, Revathy's uncle, Shanmuga Rajan calls her and shares a message secretly (that's not yet revealed). He also ends up getting promise from Revathy. Almost at the same moment, Jothy decides to reveal everything to Revathy and get her help in marrying Karthik. Though a bit taken back, Revathy accepts to help Jothy and Karthik. But really instead of helping them she secretly keeps them apart by not allowing Jothy and Karthik to talk to each other.

Shanmugarajan decides to go ahead with Jothy's marriage with Aravind in a temple and he asks his wife Dhanam not to reveal this to Jothy. Though Revathy is aware of this secret marriage idea, she hides the truth from Jothy. In the temple, Jothy comes to know about her parent’s secret plan and is shocked. She is more hurt by the betrayal of Revathy. Revathy tries to convince Jothy, saying that if Jothy marries Karthik, Shanmuga Rajan will be broken. Still Jothy is not convinced and at the last moment with the help of her sister in law Sangeetha, she manages to run away from the temple and marries Karthik.

Shanmuga Rajan and family are heartbroken. Jothy tries to apologize to her family but Shanmuga Rajan and Dhanam doesn't accept it. Through her cunning words, Sangeetha makes Jothy believe that Revathy is the reason behind all these things. She also makes Jothy believe that Revathy is jealous of Jothy becoming daughter in law of Abirami's rich family. Karthik and Abirami are also infuriated by Revathy's betrayal.

Even her aunt Dhanam and her mother start believing that Revathy did all those things purposely to deny Jothi from marrying Karthik.

So now as expected everyone blame Revathy for all the recent events and finally she shares the truth with her husband Prabhu. She tells him that she did all those things to satisfy her uncle Shanmuga Rajan. Shanmuga Rajan has told her that he will commit suicide if Jothi doesn't marry the groom of his choice. Even when Prabhu shares this truth with his family members, no one believes Revathy. Adding to Revathy's issue, unexpectedly Shanmuga Rajan dies of natural causes. Now both Dhanam family and Abirami family hold Revathy responsible for the sudden demise of Shanmuga Rajan. She is thrown out of both the houses. Prabhu, her husband alone believes her and stands by her. He leaves the house along with Revathy and lives in a rented house with the help of Revathy's friend Ashok.

Though Prabhu's father persuades him to come back to his house, Prabhu says no and offers resignation from his father's company. Finally a letter written by Shanmuga Rajan reaches Dhanam's family and it clears all the doubts they had on Revathy. So the family goes in search of Revathy and conveys the truth to Abirami and family also. With all the issues cleared, everyone offer their apologies to Revathy. Revathy accepts them gracefully and she is reunited with her best friend Jothi.

And that's the end of this serial :)

The serial had a very disappointing end considering the fact that it had an excellent run for 250+ episodes. There are so many open questions like what did Shanmuga Rajan ask Revathy to do in the temple? How did Abirami find out the betrayal of her nephew? How did Shanmuga Rajan die? etc.

On a final note, Pirivom Santhipom story line was not very different from other mega serials. And that too in the last few episodes it was too very predictable. The director seemed to be a bit confused too!

But there were a few USPs for the serial like the friendship between Jothy and Revathy, First time a heroine (or a second heroine) shown as an ordinary looking girl etc.

But I was expecting to get an answer to the question 'Are beautiful people happier than the ordinary looking ones?" (atleast that's what Vijay TV's site said about the serial)  But I am utterly disappointed. 

As Revathy says in the final episode I wish I can also say "என்னால யாரையும் வெறுக்க முடியாது" (I can't hate any one), for disappointing me this much after following this serial for a long time.

Still Pirivom Santhipom a.k.a PS will stay in our mind for the unique friendly relationship between Jothi and Revathy!
